    Police open fire on Kashmir protestors demanding ban on Rushdie's book

    SRINAGAR, Feb 13 (1989): At least one person was killed today when police opened fire on demonstrators as Muslim anger over a book by Salman Rushdie spread to Kashmir. Police said they intercepted protesters throwing rocks and fire bombs and shouting "Down with Rushdie" in several parts of Srinagar. Police opened fire after protesters pelted them with rocks and firebombs. Nine people hurt during the clashes were taken to hospital. In neighboring Pakistan, five people were killed outside the U.S....
