By-polls cancelled to ‘save’ PDP’s image: Congress

ECI has taken the decision on recommendations of state Govt: NC

Srinagar: National Conference and the Congress has accused the Election Commission of India for ‘saving the image of PDP’ by cancelling the Anantnag parliamentary elections.

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Chief, G A Mir said that the step taken by the ECI is aimed to save the coalition government from embarrassment.

“I believe the atmosphere in South Kashmir was more conducive than Srinagar. Every section of people in South Kashmir had resolved to cast their ballots against the PDP, therefore the ECI cancelled elections to save the image of PDP,” he said.

National Conference (NC) General Secretary and MLA Khanyar Ali Muhammad Sagar said that the decision has been taken on the ‘recommendation’ of the state government.

“ECI has taken this decision on the recommendation of the coalition government in the state. Earlier, everybody urged ECI to postpone the by-polls keeping in view the unfavourable atmosphere but they continued with their decision and later PDP’s candidate urged the commission to postpone the election which was agreed by the ECI,” said Sagar.

The Election Commission of India on Sunday cancelled the by-polls for Anantnag parliament seat scheduled for 25th of May stating that holding free and fair elections would not be possible in the prevailing situation.
