27 students sustain injuries during clashes in Sopore

Srinagar: There seems to be no let down in student protests in the valley. On Thursday, at least 27 students including 12 girls were injured in Sopore district after they clashed with the government forces.

Clashes erupted when forces fired tear gas shells at students of Government Degree College Sopore, Government Boys and Girls Higher Secondary schools tried to carry out a protest march against the forces action against students of Degree College Pulwama on April 15.

Eye-witnesses said that around 27 students sustained injures during the clashes.

“The injured students were rushed to hospital for treatment,” they said.

As soon as clashes erupted, all business establishments were closed.

Dr. Sami, Medical Superintendent SDH Sopore, informed that 27 students including 12 girls received minor injuries and were brought to the hospital for treatment.

“All students who were brought to the hospital for treatment had received minor injuries,” he said.

Police officials in Sopore however declined to comment on the incident.

Meanwhile, students of Government Polytechnic College also clashed with police outside their college in Gogjibagh area of Srinagar.

Witnesses said that students staged a protest inside the college and later hit the streets where they pelted stones on police.

Police retaliated by resorting to tear gas shelling in order to chase the protesting students away.
