LoC Tensions: GREF personnel killed, two others injured

Srinagar: A General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF) personnel was killed while two others injured in alleged ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Thursday.

Army said that a BSF soldier was also seriously injured in the Pakistani shelling.

Defence spokesperson in Jammu told reporters that the forces posted along Line of Control from Pakistani side started unprovoked firing and shelling targeting Indian positions and civilian areas of Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch and Naushera sector of Rajouri district around 7:30 this morning.

“Indian troops guarding the borderline retaliated the fire and gave a befitting reply,” he said.

Intermittent exchange of fire was continuing when last reports came in. Small arms automatics and mortars are said to be used in firing.

Meanwhile, as per Pak army statement three persons were injured when Indian troops resorted to “unprovoked” firing along the Line of Control (LoC).

“Indian troops opened fire at Battal, Jandrot and Hotspring sectors at [the] LoC,” the ISPR statement said.

The latest incident of cross-border firing comes days after Indian army had claimed that it carried out an “operation” on Pakistani posts along the LoC in a bid to prevent “infiltrators” from entering India.

However, Pakistan had denied India’s claims.

Indian Army chief, Gen Bipin Rawat, has reached J&K where he is scheduled to hold a security review meet today.
