Ramban’s Fairoz Khan is Indian National Congress’ student union chief

Srinagar: The Indian National Congress (INC) has appointed a Jammu based lawyer as president of its national student body – National Students Union of India (NSUI).

“Congress President Sonia Gandhi has accorded her approval to the appointment of Fairoz Khan as NSUI President for a period of two years with immediate effect,” AICC General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi said in a statement.

He will head NSUI for two years before his term comes to an end..

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had formed a screening committee to shortlist deserving candidates for the presidentship of all-India NSUI.

“Seven candidates were shortlisted for the coveted post who were interviewed by Rahul Gandhi,” sources in the INC told the FreePressKashmir. “Two of them were from Jammu and Kashmir.”

Fairoz Khan, 28, hails from Mehtra area of Banihal in Ramban district. His forefathers are from Pogal Paristan hills of the district.

NSUI J&K unit president, Neeraj Kundan, told the FreePressKashmir that Fairoz joined Congress’ student body during his college days in Baderwah a decade before.

“Fairoz went on to pursue LLB from Jammu University wherefrom he completed Masters in Political Science as well,” he informed.

Before being elevated to president’s post, Fairoz was National General Secretary of NSUI.

He is currently based in Jammu where he works as a lawyer.

“By evening, we will be in Delhi to receive the formal orders,” Kundan – a lawyer himself, who was one of the seven shortlisted candidates, said.

Fairoz was in Ramban when this story was being filed.
