Assembly: Majid Dar & Co was killed because NC opposed dialogue, Sajad Lone tells house

Srinagar: If National Conference would not have opposed dialogue with then Hizb ul Mujahideen in 2000, situation would have been different, the Legislative Assembly was told on Saturday.

As Peoples Conference (PC) Kupwara lawmaker, Advocate Bashir Ahmad Dar, stood up to participate in the obituary references motion, he was interrupted by Muhammad Akbar Lone of National Conference (NC).

PC is an ally of right wing BJP in J&K government. Dar ridiculed the opposition NC as how can they comment on PDP and PC for aligning with BJP when NC working president had already enjoyed a stint as MoS Foreign Affairs in Atal Bihari Vajpayee led NDA Government in early 2000.

This pained Lone who stood up and criticised Dar, however, PC’s Dar replied saying, “Lone is my junior (in the party) but he then changed.”

Lone was lambasting the PDP-BJP government for its failure on dailogue front.

The PC chief and minister from BJP quota, Sajad Gani Lone, joined his party colleague.

“Have you forgot Nehru Guest House and how you sent media there,” Sajad said addressing the National Conference members.

He was referring to the secret meeting between a group of Hizb ul Mujahideen which held talks with then India’s ministry of home affairs in 2000.

“You got the members of Majid Dar group exposed,” Sajad told the NC. “Majid Dar was killed because NC opposed dialogue.”

Dar had unilaterally declared ceasefire but was killed in 2003 in Sopore by two gunmen  and no one claimed responsibility for the attack.

Because NC was opposed to dialogue with militants and Pakistan, Sajad added, National Conference government exposed the secret meeting.

Dar, who took sigh of relief, told the house that the Member Parliament of NC did not secure votes as equal to what he secured in last assembly elections.

“Let their (NC and Congress) leaders prepare to talk,” he told the house, “we will listen to them.”

The governor N N Vohra has called a special session of J&K Legislative Assembly to discuss the extension of central Goods and Services Tax (GST) to the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

However, the PDP-BJP government is facing a stiff resistance from National Conference and Congress while the joint resistance leadership termed the law as a plan “to cripple economy of J&K”.
