Kashmir Mourning: 11 deaths, scores of funerals, gun salutes, strike, restrictions    

Srinagar: It was a bloody Friday for Kashmir. Three Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants, including its district Commander Junaid Mattoo, died in a fire fight that extended for 16 long hours .

Police on Saturday confirmed the death of militants and said that they “recovered three bodies of militants killed in an encounter with armed forces in Arwani village of Bijbehara in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir”.

Mattoo was a resident of Khudwani area of Kulgam district.

The other two slain militants were identified as Nasir Wani of Heff village of Shopian and Adil Mushtaq Mir of Frestbal Pampore.

Two civilians were also killed after the Indian armed forces opened fire to disperse protesters trying to disturb the military operation.

Tens of thousands of people on Saturday participated in the funeral prayers of Mattoo in Khudwani village in Qaimoh tehsil.

At least twelve rounds of funerals were held for Mattoo at a local Eidgah as thousands of mourners continued to pour in from various parts of Kashmir including Bhijbehara, Kulgam, Pulwama and Tral.

At least ten militants appeared in the funeral of slain Lashkar-e-Toiba militant Nasir Wani in Heff village of Shopian district and offered gun salute.

The funeral prayers were held at least six times.

Thousands of people participated in the funeral prayers of slain Lashkar-e-Toiba militant Adil Mushtaq Mir in Frestbal area of Pampore in Pulwama district.

The funeral prayers were held at a local ground where mourners braving heat and fasting continued to pour in from various parts of Kashmir. At least five militants appeared in the funeral, which was attended by thousands of people, who offered gun-salute.

Meanwhile, District Magistrate Srinagar, Dr Farooq Ahmad Lone, said that restrictions were imposed in the areas of Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowhatta, M.R. Gunj and Safa Kadal to “maintain law and order”.

The other parts in the city looked deserted due to the shutdown call given by the resistance leadership.
