J&K: Road accidents kill 955 persons, injure 7685 others in 2016

Srinagar: Kashmir valley witnessed 287 deaths in road side accidents in 2016 with Leh district registering the highest cases.

The accident-related death on roads has increased in J&K state, police records show. Compared to 917 deaths in 2015, 2016 saw 955 deaths.

In 20126, Kashmir Valley remained almost shut for six months during which people were on road with pro-freedom protests reported every day. Over hundred civilians were killed since July 08, 2016 up to December in Indian armed forces action.

The new released data by J&K Police showed that 7,685 people were injured in 5,500 accidents across the state last year. “Out of the total 955 deaths, 133 were women,” the data revealed.

The highest fatalities took place in Jammu region districts, where 668 persons died in road accidents. Jammu district with 160 deaths has the highest number of road fatalities, followed by Ramban with 84, Udhampur 76 and Kathua 72.

On Monday, a person had a narrow escape after the vehicle he was travelling in fell into Nallah Sindh in Sonamarg area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.

However, driver of the vehicle, identified as Fayaz Ahmed, a resident of Qamarwari in Srinagar, is missing and is feared to have been drowned in the nallah. Searches have been launched to trace him.

Police rescued the man from gushing waters of Nallah Sindh after the car plunged into the Nallah near Hang Park area under the jurisdiction of Police station Gund.

The highest number of deaths took place in Leh district, where 55 people lost their lives in road accidents, followed by Srinagar with 51, Kargil 35 and Anantnag 22.

The data also revealed that 5,500 accidents took place last year against 5,850 in 2015, showing a decrease of 350 cases.

Last year, Jammu witnessed 1,275 road accidents — the highest in J&K. Jammu was followed by Udhampur with 467 accidents, Kathua 461, Rajouri 362 and Srinagar 324.

Only six districts in Jammu and one in Kashmir showed an increase in the number of accidents. The districts showing an increase in the number of accidents are Kathua, Samba, Reasi, Poonch, Doda and Kishtwar in the Jammu region and Awantipora (Police district) in Kashmir.

In 2015, 917 persons had died in road accidents while 8,142 persons were injured in 5,836 road accidents.

In 2014 and 2013, 1,982 persons had died in road accidents.
