DPS military operation: Police declare two militants dead

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir police on Sunday declared two suspected militants dead in a military operation in summer capital f Jammu and Kashmir.

On Saturday evening around 6:30, suspected militants attacked a para-military CRPF patrol party in Pantha Chowk killing one of its officers and injuring two others including a civilian. The militants fled from the spot unhurt followed by a massive search operation by the armed forces.

The incident happened near Delhi Public School campus.

Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant outfit claimed responsibility of the attack.

Director General of J&K Police, Dr SP Vaid, said, “two bodies of the militants are lying in a room inside Delhi Public School building.”

Srinagar district administration authorities immediately imposed section 144 in the area to avoid civilian casualties as forces launched combing operation inside the sprawling school campus.

The watch and ward staff of the school was evacuated and room to room searched held.

However, a CRPF spokesperson said that contact with the suspected militants “holed in a school (DSP) building” was established late last night which resumed around 3:30 this morning.

The area was cordoned off and traffic on Sonwar-Pantha Chowk has been diverted to other routes.

Muslims in Kashmir will mostly probably celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Monday marking end of month long fasting. Markets are witnessing rush as the faithful are shopping essentials for the festival.

The Indian armed forces used heavy mortar shelling to target suspected militants.
