First batch of Amarnath Yatris leaves for Valley from Jammu

Srinagar: The first batch of about 950 Amarnath Yatris left for the Kashmir valley from Yatri Niwas at Bhagwati Nagar, the base camp of Amarnath pilgrimage in Jammu, amid tight security arrangements on Wednesday morning.

At least two lakh and thirty thousand Hindus have registered for the annual Yatra.

While the Yatris at Pahalgam and Baltal, the base camps of the yatra in Kashmir, will begin yatra on Thursday.

The batch was flagged off by Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh.

Nirmal Singh said that multi-tier security has been put in place all along the Jammu-Srinagar Highway and upto the cave shrine in view of frequent terror attacks in the area.

Thirty five to forty thousand armed personnel are guarding the routes leading to Amarnath cave.

He added that other facilities like shelter and health facilities have also been made.

The Hindu Yatra will conclude on 7 August with one batch each leaving from the two base camps daily.
