Army man flees with gun, ammunition, manhunt launched

Srinagar: Zahoor Ahmad Thakur, a resident of Pulwama, of 173 Territorial Army, fled his unit during the night, along with a gun and ammunition.

“Zahoor is Kashmiri army man, and deserted his unit with an AK 47 rifle and three magazines of ammunition in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district” according to reports.

According to a report in GK, Zahoor fled from his unit in Gantmulla area of the district during the night.

Thakur is a resident of Pulwama district in south Kashmir.

“All we know is that he has fled. We have received nothing in written yet”, a police official speaking to FreePressKashmir said.

Police Control Room (PCR) Srinagar and Baramulla denied having any more information on the subject.

Sources said that a manhunt has been launched to nab him.

Several policemen have deserted their posts and joined militant ranks in the past couple of years in the valley.

Back in March, Naseer Ahmed Pandit, a resident of Karimabad village of Pulwama, had decamped with two AK rifles on March 27, 2015 from the residence of PDP Minister Altaf Bukhari.

He was subsequently killed in an encounter in Shopian district in April 2016

Next, in May, the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen claimed that the Jammu and Kashmir Police constable Syed Naveed (Mushtaq) Shah who had decamped with four assault rifles, had joined their militant outfit.

The intention behind Thakur’s desertion is not yet known.

Reports said there were apprehensions that Zahoor might have joined militant ranks, as well.
