Burhan anniversary: Grateful to people for cooperation, says DGP

‘Broadband services to be restored by evening today’

Srinagar: The normal life across the valley, Saturday, was crippled as restrictions and undeclared curfews were imposed by the government on the death anniversary of popular Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant commander Burhan Wani.

Burhan was killed last year on July 8, in an encounter with the Indian Armed forces, catalyzing a massive uprising and prolonged period of curfews and shutdowns across the valley, in which as many as 85 people were killed and thousands of others were injured in daily clashes between the Indian Armed Forces and the protesters for a period of over four months.

A shutdown was observed today (Saturday) in Muslim dominated areas of Chenab, particularly the Bhaderwah district on the call of Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL).

Meanwhile, the Director General of Police, Dr S. P Vaid has ‘thanked people for their cooperation in maintaining law and order’.

In view of the Burhan’s death anniversary, the authorities had also suspended both the mobile and the broadband internet services .The services were suspended on Friday evening while the services were operational occasionally since Thursday evening.

He also announced that the broadband internet services will be restored by evening today (Saturday).

A government official said that restrictions under section 144 Criminal Procedure (CrPc) were imposed in most parts of the Valley today to thwart unrest on the maiden anniversary of Burhan.

Meanwhile, strict curfew was imposed in Tral, the native village of Burhan Wani.

All the shops, public transport and other businesses remained closed. Private as well as the public transport was off the roads in the uptown areas of Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley where the restrictions or curfew was not in force.

The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) had called for a complete shutdown today to mourn the death of Wani and his two associates.

Meanwhile, leaders and activists from resistance camp visited the residence of Burhan Wani and paid tributes to the slain Hizb commander there.

Clashes and the protests broke out at various places in the Valley today during which the forces already deployed on the roads used tear gas canisters to disperse the protestors.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Kashmir Range, S P Pani said “The situation remained peaceful throughout the day barring few minor incidents in Tral and Pulwama areas.”

He also thanked the people for cooperating in maintaining the law and order situation today, which helped police to ensure peaceful situation throughout the day.

Muzaffar Wani, the father of late Burhan Wani said that Tral area, and particularly his house, was completely sealed by army ‘which harassed the people’ also.
