Eight boys prevented from joining militancy: Police

‘These boys were handed over to their parents after proper counseling’

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday said that they prevented eight boys from joining militant ranks from Kupwara in the last month.

A statement from the police said that during last month, four boys of Gulgam village were rescued who were trying to cross the LoC for joining militant groups.

“They were intercepted by a Police party deputed for the purpose near LoC and were brought back to Police Station Kupwara. These boys were handed over to their parents after proper counselling. During last week 4 boys have been prevented from joining the militant groups by timely intervention of district Police Kupwara,” the police statement read.

These boys have been identified as, Hilal Ahmad Fafoo (18), son of Abdul Rashid Fatoo, a resident of Sheeri, Baramulla, Firdous Ahmad Bhat (19), son of Lal Mohammad, a resident of  Bumhama, Kupwara, Touseef Ahmad Shah (16), son of Maqsood Ahmad, resident of Shatmuqam, Lolab and Ahteram-ul-Haq Shah (16), son of Abdul Ahad Shah, also a resident of Shatmuqam, Lolab.

The police statement added that after receiving information about their fleeing from their homes, police parties were sent to different locations as per the information generated based on their mobile towers locations.

During the swift operation, two boys from Shatmuqam, Lolab were intercepted from Pulwama area who were heading toward Tral and other two hailing from Bumhama were intercepted at Vodhpora area who were also planning to move toward Shopian area.

During their sustained interrogations, police claimed that all the boys have confessed that they were going to join the militant ranks.

“They are being reprimanded by their parents owing to various reasons including being poor in studies besides they were also fed up with life style at home due to poverty,” the statement said.

The statement added, “All the rescued boys have been properly counselled and motivated for their re-union with the families besides brain wash so as to remove disillusionment from their minds.”
