Gurez gunfight: Two militants killed, search operation going on

Srinagar: The Indian Army on Tuesday claimed to have foiled an infiltration bid in Gurez valley of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district by killing a militant.

“A group of six militants at around 11:30 pm (last night, on Monday) tried to sneak into (this side of) Line of Control (LoC). Army personnel of 13 Sikh regiment noticed the movement. The militants fired at them, which was retaliated to, triggering a gunfight,” a Srinagar based Defence spokesperson, Col. Rajesh Kalia said.

He said the intermittent firing continued till 6 am in the morning. “A body of militant was recovered. Another was believed to be injured. Further search operation is going on,” he added.

The toll in ongoing gunfight in Gurez valley of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district has mounted to two with the killing of another militant, the army added in an update.

The Srinagar based defence spokesman said that another militant was killed in Gurez. “Total two militants have been killed so far. Operation is in progress,” he said.

According to a report in Greater Kashmir, “an official said that fresh exchange of fire resumed at around 10 am near Bagtore area of Gurez.”

Kalia said that an infiltration bid was foiled in Gurez sector in which one militant was killed.

“Three weapons have also been recovered. Operation is in progress,” he added.
