Srinagar: Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Dr. Shesh Paul Vaid on Wednesday said that the National Investigation Agency’s probe against the Hurriyat leaders is correct and the people have the right to know ‘who is disturbing their lives.’
Vaid while taking to reporters un Baramulla said that people should wait and see what the NIA is doing.
“But people in Kashmir have right to know that who is selling their blood, burning their schools and disrupting their lives. Whosoever is doing it must be brought to book,” Vaid said.
NIA has arrested seven Hurriyat leaders for their alleged role in “creating unrest” in the Kashmir valley. Those arrested are Farooq Ahmed Dar alias Bitta Karate, Nayeem Khan, Raja Mehrajuddin Kalwal, Peer Saifullah, Aftab Hilali Shah alias Shahid-ul-Islam, Aiyaz Akbar Khaney and Altaf Ahmed Shah alias Fantoosh Geelani, the son-in-law of Hurriyat (G) leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
They were sent to 10-day NIA custody by a New Delhi court yesterday.
Earlier in the day, Hurriyat leader Shabir Shah was also sent to a 7-day enforcement directorate custody by the Patiala House Court.
The NIA has also said that the top Hurriyat leadership including Geelani, Mirwaiz and Malik could also be arrested, if needed.
‘Slowly, people in south are cooperating’
Meanwhile, the DGP appreciated the people of the state for “cooperating” with the police and said that in north Kashmir, police and security forces have been successful because of their support and cooperation. He added that people in the restive south are following suit, slowly.
“Slowly, the people in south Kashmir are cooperating with the police. People in Kashmir are against terrorism and bloodshed. Police and security forces have been successful because of the cooperation from people,” he said.
The police chief said that number of militants keeps varying as per the “infiltration, local recruitment, and neutralization”.
“There is no magical number. But let me tell you that situation is quite better than it was last year. For this, I congratulate the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
