Tahab gunfight: Three rounds of funeral prayers held for slain Hizb militant

Srinagar: At least three rounds of funeral prayers were held for slain Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant Shariq Ahmad at his ancestral Takuna village of Pulwama in south Kashmir on Sunday.

Two militants, reportedly from Hizb-ul-Mujahideen were killed in a gunfight with the Indian Armed Forces in Tahab area of Pulwama district in south Kashmir on Sunday.

Hizb-ul-Mujahideen , founded by Muhammad Ahsan Dar in September 1989, is a Kashmiri resistance and designated Islamic militant group, active in the state of Jammu and Kashmir since 1989. The current commander of the group is a Sayeed Salahudeen.

Ahmad was killed along with his associate Shabir Ahmad Mir during a brief gunfight in Tahab village of the district earlier today.

Thousands of people from different villages turned up in Takuna village to take part in his last rites.

Over a dozen persons were injured after government forces used live ammunition and fired tear gas shells to disperse protesters in Tahab and other areas of Pulwama district in south Kashmir following the death of two militants in the gunfight.

Internet services were suspended in Pulwama district of south Kashmir following the killing of two militants in a shootout in Tahab village early Sunday.

“To accommodate the huge crowd of people, three rounds of funeral prayers were held at the Higher Secondary school ground,” said locals.

According to reports, pro-freedom and pro-Islam slogans were raised during the last rites.

The encounter comes after three militants were killed when security forces foiled an infiltration bid on the Line of Control in Gurez sector of north Kashmir on Thursday.

Three militants were killed in an encounter after security forces stormed a forest area in south Kashmir’s Tral in Pulwama district on July 15.
