One Lashkar militant killed in Samboora gunfight, clashes erupt

Srinagar: A militant of the Lashkar-e-Taiba militant outfit has been killed in a gunfight with the Indian Armed Forces in Samboora area of Pampore in south Kashmir’s Pulwama, police said on Monday.

This is the seventh encounter between the Indian Armed Forces and militants in a week.

Acting swiftly, a joint team of Army’s 50 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation at Akram Dar Mohalla, Samboora, Pulwama”, said a police official, reports said.

The official said as the joint team intensified the search operation, the militants – believed to be three in number – opened fire, triggering an encounter.

Two militants are believed to have escaped from the site of the gunfight.

According to reports in Greater Kashmir, a daily newspaper based in Srinagar, an official said that the firefight ended around 3 am. “The body of the Lashkar militant, a resident of Pakistan, has been recovered,” he said.

The firefight started late last night after army and police cordoned off the area following inputs about the presence of militants.

However, clashes erupted after youth took to streets and pelted forces with stone to help the militants escape.

A protester has reportedly been injured during the clashes.
