Handwara gunfight enters second day, one militant killed

Islamabad: The Handwara gunfight between the militants and Indian Armed Forces entered the second day on Wednesday.

The Defence PRO, Rajesh Kalia, while speaking to the FreePressKashmir, said, “one militant has been killed, and a weapon has been recovered from the encounter site.”

Earlier, reports in the media said that Para Commandos have been rushed to the spot and resumed a search operation in Hafrudha forest area of Handwara in Kupwara district to find out hiding militants.

An unidentified militant was killed yesterday after an encounter took place between hiding militants and the armed forces. The operation was suspended late last evening, reports said.

Mr Kalia, on being asked about the reports regarding presence of para commandos, said, “the operation is still going on.”

Reports said they could see army helicopters flying in the area since wee hours on Wednesday.

The gunfight had started on Tuesday after forces launched searches in the area following a tip off about the presence of militants.

Forces launched a cordon and search operation at Hongnikote in Haphruda forest area of Handwara, 85 km’s from Srinagar, following information about the presence of militants there, the officials said.

They said during searches, the militants opened fire on forces who retaliated, triggering a gun battle.
