Woman and newborn die at LD hospital, relatives accuse doctors of negligence

Srinagar: Relatives of a woman who along with her newborn baby boy died after treatment at Lal Ded Hospital Tuesday staged a protest in front of the hospital, accusing the doctors of negligence leading to tragedy.

Afroza Banoo wife of Muhammad Ashraf Shah, a resident of Chhattargul area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district was admitted to Lal Ded Hospital Srinagar after she developed labour pain on Monday.

The protesting husband told a news agency CNS that she was healthy while the doctors assured him of normal delivery. But all of sudden the doctors in the hospital advised us to arrange blood as her condition worsened.

“We arranged 11 blood points. The irony is that the doctors didn’t inform us of her death. When I tried to see her in the ICU, I was told she and the newborn baby is fine. After an endless wait, we entered into the ICU and found her dead body.

“The doctors had disappeared from the spot,” he said and alleged that the hospital has turned into a slaughter house where negligent doctors play with the lives of poor people.

The relatives placed the dead bodies in the compound of the hospital and staged massive protest. They wanted to know the cause of the death; however, no doctor arrived there to pacify them.

A police team from Rajbagh Police Station arrived on the spot and assured protesters of justice.
Station House Officer Raj Bagh Police Station Ghulam Mohiuddin said that they can register the FIR only on the instructions of Medical Board. “There is a Supreme Court ruling that in such matter a Medical Board should probe the incident and if negligence on part of doctors is proved, then police can file an FIR,” he said.

This Reporter was told that Medcial Superintendent LD is not present in the Hospital while attempts to contact him didn’t materialize as he didn’t pick up the repeated phone calls.
