Armed forces allegedly barge inside degree college, thrash teachers, students in Handwara

Srinagar: The Indian Armed Forces on Wednesday used teargas shelling to disperse students of Govt Degree College Handwara protesting against the killing of their mate Shahid Bashir Mir in an alleged fake encounter.

The native village of Mir, who was gunned down by government forces in an alleged fake encounter in Hafrada forests in Handwara, witnessed violent clashes on Thursday, even as the slain youth’s family maintained that he was “killed in a staged encounter.”

The Army had on Tuesday claimed to have killed a militant in Hafrada forests during a gun-battle with the militants, but the alleged militant on Wednesday turned out to be a civilian who, according to police, has no involvement in militancy.

Reports in Greater Kashmir, a newspaper based in Srinagar, said that the forces allegedly thrashed and manhandled several teachers of the college.

Earlier, students staged protest against the killing of Mir who was a student of the same college.

“Witnesses said that forces resorted to teargas shelling to disperse the protesters,” the reports added.

Later, the forces allegedly barged inside the college and thrashed the teachers, said a teacher, wishing anonymity.

Meanwhile, a delegation of teachers is heading towards the office of Deputy Commissioner Handwara to register protest against the forces’ action, the report further added.
