Government imposes restrictions in Srinagar areas

Srinagar: The government on Sunday imposed restrictions in Srinagar parts falling under the jurisdiction of six Police Stations while a complete shutdown was observed in rest of the Valley to protest against the visit of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to the state.

Officials said that the restrictions under Section 144 of CrPC were imposed in Srinagar areas falling under the jurisdiction of six Police Stations including Nowhatta, M R Gunj, Rainawari, Khanyar, Safakadal, and Maisuma as “precautionary measures”.

The restrictions were imposed in view of the shutdown called by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) against the visit of Rajnath Singh to the state.  Notably, Singh is on four-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir to review the security situation here.

Singh, whose four-day visit begun on Saturday met about 35 delegations and discussed varied issues related to the ‘peace and prosperity’ of the state.

A large contingent of force was deployed on the Srinagar roads to thwart protests Union Home Minister’s visit.

Witnesses said that the forces had also erected the concertina wires on the roads, which resulted in a huge traffic mess in Srinagar areas.
Meanwhile, all the shops and other business establishments in most parts of the Valley including the commercial Hub Lal Chowk remained closed while the traffic was also thin on the roads.

Similar reports of shutdown as received from several other districts of South and north Kashmir.

Reports said that the shops, business establishments and other things remained closed while the traffic was also thin on the roads throughout the day. Meanwhile, a top police official said that situation across the Valley remained peaceful and under control throughout the day.
