Restrictions in Srinagar over the killing of Lashkar commander Abu Ismail

Srinagar: The Indian Government Authorities in Srinagar on Friday imposed restrictions in parts of the city to prevent protests against the killing of top Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Abu Ismail.

Prohibitory orders under the Code of Criminal Procedure was clamped in Khanyar, Rainawari, Nowhatta, M.R. Gunj and Safa Kadal following Ismail’s death on Thursday.

Parts of city were kept under restrictions with barbed wires installed at various points. The army along with Riot Control vehicles were deployed in various parts of the city.

“Restrictions under Section 144 of the CrPc have been imposed to maintain law and order,” a Jammu and Kashmir police official said.

On Thursday, the authorities had snapped Internet services in Srinagar after the Lashkar-e-Taiba commander was killed along with his other Pakistani associate, Chota Qasim in Nowgam area here.

Abu Ismail, a top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant operating in Kashmir was killed on Thursday in a brief encounter with the Indian Armed forces in Arigam area in Nowgam area of Srinagar district, police said.

Lashkar-e-Taiba is one of the largest and most active Islamic militant organizations in South Asia, operating mainly from Pakistan. It was founded in 1987 by Hafiz Saeed, Abdullah Azzam and Zafar Iqbal in Afghanistan, with funding from Osama Bin Laden. Its headquarters are in Muridke, near Lahore in Punjab province of Pakistan, and the group operates several training camps in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

All colleges and higher secondary schools have been closed in the city as a precautionary measure.

Train services between Baramulla and Bannihal have also been suspended.
