Choti Cutter strikes in Tral, another attempt foiled in Bandipora

Starting from September 14 in Kulgam district, more than 80 braid-chopping incidents have been reported in the Valley. Kulgam has had at least 30 reported braid-chopping attacks, highest in any district of Kashmir Valley.

Srinagar: In a fresh braid-chopping incident, a 45-year-old woman in Tral was attacked in her courtyard and her braid chopped off on Wednesday night.

According to media reports, the woman was in her courtyard late night yesterday when the attacker caught hold of her and managed to chop off her hair.

The lady, a resident of Nowdal in south Kashmir’s Tral district, raised an alarm which alerted her husband, who came running to the courtyard. However the choti cutter was able to flee the scene.

The police have started an investigation into the attack, according to local media.

In another attempt of braid-chopping, a 28-year-old woman thwarted an attacker in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The woman, a resident of Dangar Mohalla of Kaloosa area of Bandipora district in north Kashmir, was attacked by a choti cutter when she was coming out of her home’s washroom at 6 am.

The woman’s family have told local media that the attacker was lying in wait for the woman and the moment she came out, the attacker tried to chop off her hair with a knife.

The woman resisted and raised a hue and cry following which the attacker fled from the spot.

Police have so far been clueless about the dozens of braid-chopping incidents reported on daily basis from different parts of the Valley.

In Jammu district, at least 120 cases of braid-chopping have been reported.

The police have formed special investigation teams (SITs) in every  order to nab the attackers. They have also raised the award money for information on choti cutters to rupees 6 lakh.

The first braid-chopping incident in India was reported in Gurgaon, UP on July 30 this year.
