Chinese woman goes partially blind after playing mobile game for 24 hours

Bejing: A 21-year-old woman has been rendered partially blind after spending an entire 24 hours glued to her smartphone playing mobile games.

The woman, who uses the pseudonym Wu Xiaojing, was reportedly playing the multiplayer online game Honour of Kings when she suddenly lost the vision in her right eye.

According to South China Morning Post, she was taken to hospital in her native China and diagnosed with Retinal Artery Occlusion (RAO). According to doctors treating the woman, RAO is a medical condition usually found in the elderly and that in this case it was caused by eye strain from looking at the screen for too long without a break.

The woman, who works in finance, told local press she had become so addicted to the game that she would play it in the evenings after work and all day long at weekends.

“On days when I have no work, I usually get up at 6 am, eat breakfast and play until 4 pm,” she told the South China Morning Post.

“Then I’ll eat something, have a nap and play until 1 am,” she said.

“Sometimes I would be so absorbed in the game that I would forget to eat, and not listen to my parents when they told me it’s time for dinner.”

She is still in the hospital as the doctors are trying to save her eyesight, the report said. “Honour of Kings”, a historical battle game, has 200 million registered players in China alone and has been denounced for being too addictive.

While playing online games, one should take a break after every half an hour to mitigate the damage it will cause to eyesight, the doctors recommended.
