Braid Chopping: Mob tried to set mentally challenged person ablaze, say Police

Srinagar: The Police on Friday in a statement said that a mob, who had caught hold of a mentally challenged person after being mistaken as a braid chopper, were trying to set him on fire.

The police statement also added that some miscreants were trying to run a tractor over him.

“Sopore police got information that a mob had got hold of an alleged braid chopper in fruit mandi area. Immediately a police party rushed to spot and found that a mob was beating one person ruthlessly. The miscreants had also burnt some grass and were trying to set the person ablaze. Some miscreants were trying to run a tractor over him,” a police statement said.

The statement also added that the person Wasim Ahmed Tantray has been referred to Srinagar as his condition is said to be critical. He was earlier rushed to SDH Sopore.

Police has registered an FIR and the culprits involved have been identified.

Braids of more than a 100 women has been chopped off in the past two months. Not a single person has been nabbed in connection with the crimes. Police, on the contrary balmes the local populace for not cooperating with them.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti who after a 100 braid chopping incidents broke her silence and called it an attempt to create mass hysteria. She added that it was an attempt to undermine the dignity of women.

Her cabinet minister Altaf Bukhari, who is the Education Minister touted the who thing as ‘Mass Hysteria’ and an attempt to divert children from education.

The Opposition and the Resistance leaders have been castigating the government on a daily basis for failing to stop the incidents and ‘protecting the honour of mothers and sisters’.

In a statement on Thursday, the Joint Resistance Leadership ‘warned’ the authorities that if the attacks don’t stop they will launch a ‘peoples’ movement’.
