Ban release of Padvamati in Jammu and Kashmir, NC’s Rana urges Mehbooba

Citing potential threat to peace in Jammu region, National Conference provincial president Jammu Devender Singh Rana on Monday urged Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti to ban the release the movie ‘Padmavati’ in the state.

In his communiqué to Mehbooba, member of Legislative Assembly from Nagrota segment sought the ban on the release of the movie in Jammu and Kashmir.

“I seek your kind indulgence on the subject matter of feature film Padmavati,” Rana’s communiqué to Mehbooba said.

Citing media reports, Rana said the contents of the feature film “Padmavati” directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, based on the epic poem ‘Padmavat’ are “likely to hurt the sentiments of a particular community/religion and so has the potential to disrupt the peace and order in Jammu province.”

“Many deputations from across the Jammu province has approached me in this regard in the couple of days,” he said in his letter.

“In view of the above, I request you to kindly order the ban on the release of the feature film “Padmavati” in Jammu and Kashmir till its contents are verified and the various religious/community groups are satisfied and the feature film is not likely to hurt the sentiments of the people,” Rana’s communiqué added.

Beset with controversy for the past few weeks, Viacom18 Motion Pictures’ production ‘Padmavati’, which was due for release on December 1, has been deferred “voluntarily”, the producers said on Sunday.

In a statement to PTI, a spokesperson of Viacom18 Motion Pictures said, “Viacom18 Motion Pictures, the studio behind ‘Padmavati’, has voluntarily deferred the release date of the film from December 1st 2017.”
