Watch: US President Donald Trump recognises Jerusalem as capital of Israel

US President Donald Trump has declared Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

He also declared his intention of moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Trump also said that moving the embassy was ‘long overdue’, given that it had been US policy since 1995. He added that Previous presidents had ‘failed to deliver’ in the regard.

The future of Jerusalem was to be agreed by both Palestinians and Israelis as part of the two State solution.

In a statement made shortly after Trump’s announcement, the UN secretary general said, there should be no unilateral decision on Jerusalem.

US is the first country in the world to recognize Jerusalem as Israeli Capital. The very move possibly undermines the role of US as a mediator in the 70 year old conflict. The decision will also impact the peace process between the Palestinians and Israelis.

The city was seized by Israel in 1967 war, putting the United Nations’ intervention in the region at freeze. The holy city of Jerusalem has great religious significance for millions of people around the globe as it houses the holy sites of Muslims, Christians and Jews.

The move has sparked strong reactions from World Leaders from the UN, EU and Middle East, who have warned that the decision may destabilize the region.
