Authorities disallow Joint Resistance to hold seminar on Human Rights Abuses in Kashmir

Srinagar: Authorities on Saturday barred Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) from holding a seminar on Human Rights abuses in Kashmir Valley.

JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik had decided to organize a seminar titled “Human Rights Violations in Kashmir and Criminal Silence of World Community” at Hyderpora based residence cum office of Geealni.

A spokesperson from Geelani led Hurriyat said that a large contingent of police personnel were deployed in and around office, even the Airport road was sealed to prevent people from participating in the seminar.

“Pro freedom leaders, civil society members and even journalists were not allowed to enter the venue,” a spokesperson said.

Geelani continues to be under house arrest, ever since his arrival from New Delhi in 2014 where he had gone for medical treatment.

In the past as well, successive governments have stopped Geelani from organizing seminars in the closed rooms many times.

A police official feigned ignorance and said they didn’t stop anyone from participating in the seminar.

Another police official on condition of anonymity said that there are directions from the top that nobody should be allowed to enter Geelani’s house till Sunday night.

Pertinently, JRL has called for a shutdown on the eve of International Human Rights Day against Human Rights abuses in Kashmir Valley.
