JAMMU, May 10 (1995): The Indian government has asked moderate Kashmiri leader Farooq Abdullah to cut short a pilgrimage to Mecca and return to India for consultations, officials of Abdullah’s political party said on Wednesday.
The request for Abdullah to return from the annual Haj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia came amid expectations of a New Delhi announcement on elections in the north Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao is keen to hold polls in the state, which has been without an assembly since a separatist rebellion erupted in 1990.
