NEW DELHI, March 26: Prominent Jammu and Kashmir separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani was heckled at a seminar in north Delhi by Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists, police said Monday.
As soon as Geelani, a pro-Pakistan hardline separatist leader, arrived at the venue in the Civil Lines area at around 4 p.m. to attend the seminar, ABVP protesters gathered around him and shouted slogans and chanted ‘Vande Matram’, demanding that he leave the venue.
Geelani had arrived for the seminar organised by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS).
“Geelani was saved from any physical attack as the police escorted him inside the venue,” said a senior police official.
chief minister Omar Abdullah condemned the heckling of Geelani and
said “these Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena (BSKS) and ABVP goons are bloody idiots.”
“Anyone can assault an old man. As if attacking SASG (Geelani) will make the Kashmir issue just disappear,” the chief minister remarked on the micro-blogging site Twitter.
Geelani was heckled at a seminar in North Delhi on Monday by activits of BSKS and ABVP but timely intervention by Delhi Police prevented the situation from worsening.
