UNITED NATIONS, May 21 (1990): Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar said on Monday he was shocked and saddened by the assassination of the Kashmir Valley’s chief Moslem cleric and the death later of many mourners.

He issued an urgent call for restraint.

“The secretary general was shocked and saddened by news of the assassination of the Moslem cleric, Moulvi Mohammed Farooq, in Kashmir and the subsequent deaths,” a U.N. spokesman said.

“He once again appeals most urgently for restraint,” the statement concluded.
