To ensure smooth by-elections, GoI to send 54 additional companies of CRPF

25 companies of Armed Police already deployed: DGP

Srinagar: The government of India (GoI) has agreed to state’s request of sending additional companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for ensuring a peaceful parliamentary election in Srinagar and Anantnag constituencies.

The state’s top cop Dr S P Vaid confirmed that 54 additional companies of the CRPF will be deployed in the valley in the coming two days.

“54 additional companies of CRPF will be sent to the Valley after two days for deployment of pre-election preparations in Anantnag and Srinagar parliamentary constituencies,” Director General of Police S.P Vaid said.

Apart from that, Vaid also informed that 25 compaines of Armed Police have been already deployed in both the constituencies.

As per the information of the Chief Electoral Officer Shantanu, out of 3,194, majority of them have been categorized as ‘sensitive’ and ‘hyper-sensitive’.

Ensuring peaceful polls at polling stations in the restive South Kashmir including Kulgam, Shopian, Pulwama and parts of Anantnag will be a challenge for the security agencies. Major Political parties contesting including National Conference and Congress have admitted that campaigning and voting in these areas is challenging due to surge in militant activities.

However, after their apprehensions, the DGP had assured that the state police has ‘rich experience’ in conducting elections in the valley.
