Srinagar: A youth, who was said to have joined militant ranks, has returned home on Thursday, said Jammu and Kashmir police.

Tufail Qadir Mir, a first year BCom student at Government run Degree College in Bemina, had fled home a week ago and was believed to have joined the home grown Hizb ul Mujahideen militant outfit. Tufails’ family lives in Qamarwari in summer capital.

However, addressing a presser in Srinagar, DIG Gh Hassan Bhat said, “Tufail is home. He is with his family now.”

Tufail, a 19-year-old student showed up on social networking websites, attired in camouflage military fatigues, cradling a rifle, on May 24.

Bhat was addressing questions of media personnel whether Tufail surrendered or was arrested by police. “Why should police reveal it,” he reacted.

Bhat denied that there was any group of militants in Srinagar which was “motivating youth to join militancy”.

“Srinagar cannot be an exception (to militancy) but there is no such group,” Bhat, joined by Srinagar police chief, asserted while replying questions.
