Srinagar: Kashmir Valley, in mourning, is observing a complete shutdown on Friday against the killing of a college going student by Indian armed forces on Tuesday evening even as Mehbooba Mufti led government has ordered a magisterial enquiry in to the incident.

Adil Farooq Magray – a 19-year-old Ist year student at government run Degree College Shopian – was shot dead by armed forces on June 06 when people disrupted a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Ganowpora area of restive Shopian district.

Shopian remained shut continuously for next three days after Adil was killed as nine others sustained injuries after forces opened fire. There was a beeline of people to the house of Farooq Ahmad Magray in Ganowpora village all these days as the fruit grower family lost their eldest son.

A suspected militant was believed to be present in the native village of Adil when Indian army’s Rashtriya Rifles (RR) along with other forces agencies including J&K police and para-military CRPF launched CASO in Ganowpora last Tuesday evening.

People came on roads to help the militant escape unhurt.

The armed forces opened firing just before Iftaar (evening meals during holy Ramzan when Muslims break day-long fast) injuring at least ten civilians who were rushed to Shopian district hospital.

Adil succumbed to his injuries. He was eldest among his siblings.

The joint resistance leadership led by Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani called for a day-long shutdown in the Kashmir Valley today to protest against the killing of Adil while as Hurriyat Conference activists were asked to hold protests after Friday prayers today.

Muhammad Yasin Malik, the JKLF chief, has left his Maisuma house yesterday to evade arrest. His party said that Malik will hold protests today against the killing.

The government subsequently ordered closure of all educational institutions in the Valley which has been witnessing massive student protests since April 15 this year.

All business establishments have been closed today while public transport is off the roads. Reports of thin attendance in government offices is too pouring in.

The Srinagar district administration has imposed restrictions in several areas of J&K’s summer capital, however, there is ease in movement in uptown areas including Batamaloo and Qamarwari.

Shops, business establishments, banks and other offices are closed while as public transport is off the roads.

A magisterial inquiry under Section 176 CrPC was ordered into the killing of Adil Farooq by the Shopian district magistrate.

“Assistant Commissioner Revenue Shopian has been appointed as inquiry officer to ascertain the circumstances which led to the death of Adil Farooq on Wednesday evening,” read the DM’s order.

It may be recalled that the Indian army chief, Gen Bipin Rawat, termed all those civilians as “Over Ground Workers” (OGW) who help militants to escape search operations or encounter sites.

The statement of Gen Rawat was, however, widely criticised.

Meanwhile, reports are coming that a boy was found dead in an orchard in Aloosa village of Bandipora district early today.

He was identified as Irshad Ahmad Chichi, 17, son of Muhammad Yousuf Chichi, resident of Halmatpora Aloosa.

“The boy had run away from his home and had taken poison after some verbal duel with his family,” a news report claimed.

After conducting post-mortem and all legal formalities, the body has been handed over to the family.
