Jamia Masjid incident: Omar Abdullah ‘tweets hell’ for those who killed DySP Pandith

Srinagar: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah on Friday condemned the killing of the police officer, calling the “manner of his death a travesty”.

A deputy superintendent of police (Dy SP) was stripped naked and stoned to death by a group of people after he opened fire at them injuring three.

He was caught clicking pictures near Jamia Masjid in downtown Srinagar around 12: 30 in the intervening night of June 22 and 23.

The police officer identified as Muhammad Ayoub Pandith was on duty, a police spokesperson said.

Pandith was accompanied by another perspon who reportedly fled from the spot.

“His death is a tragedy & the manner of his death a travesty. May the people who lynched DySP Pandith burn in hell for their sins,” Omar Abdullah said in a tweet.

The wreath laying ceremony of Pandith was held in Srinagar.

“This is an extremely shameful incident,” said Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti who was present to pay her last tributes to the slain officer.

Meanhwile, DGP SP Vaid termed the killing as “sad and unfortunate”.

“The official was killed by the mob while he was performing his duties. It’s a very sad and unfortunate incident,” the DGP said.

Muslims across Kashmir were observing Shab-e-Qadr (the night of power) with night-long prayers and supplications being made inside the mosques and shrines of the valley when the incident happened.
