Safety of yatris should be prime concern of the authorities: IGP

Srinagar: In light of the intelligence units suggesting an “enhanced terror threat” to the Amarnath yatris, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has decided to directly monitor the security arrangement along the route.

Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, Shri Munir Ahmad chaired a high level meeting of senior officers of police, para-military, Army, and Intelligence at Pahalgam in Anantnag today and took stock of the security arrangements made for ensuing the Yatra.

Addressing the meeting, the IGP stressed that the safety of the yatris should be the prime concern of the authorities.

Protected by multiple levels of security, the 40-day Amarnath pilgrimage began today with the first batch of 2,280 devotees leaving for the high altitude shrine.

The security measures include satellite tracking systems, jammers and bulletproof bunkers, dog squads, CCTV cameras and quick response.

The Centre has provided over 250 companies (25,000 personnel) of paramilitary forces to the state government.

The BSF has deployed over 2,000 troops for the yatra while the Army has provided five battalions (about 5,000 personnel). An additional 54 companies (5,400 personnel) of the police have also been mobilised.

Meanwhile, the IGP also chaired a high level meeting at Baltal, Sonamarg and took stock of the security arrangements regarding the Yatra.
