Budgam encounter: Two militants laid to rest amid wailing, sloganeering

Gul was laid to rest in Hyderpora, Srinagar, while, Islam was laid to rest at his ancestral home at Churpora in Narbal. 

Srinagar: Thousands of people on Wednesday participated in the funeral prayers of slain Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant Aaquib Gul who was killed in a gunfight with the government forces in Magam area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

The encounter began on Tuesday evening between militants and forces in Rudbugh area of Budgam district. A cordon-and-search operation was launched on Tuesday night in Magam area in the district to capture the militants.

The gunfight in Rudbugh village of Budgam district in central Kashmir ended on Wednesday with the killing of all three militants trapped inside the cordon, police said.

Gul was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Goripora area of Hyderpora in Srinagar, among thousands of people and pro-freedom slogans.

“Women wailed and beat their chest as the body of Gul reached his home on Wednesday morning,” the locals said.

Gul was killed along with two associates, identified as Javid Sheikh, a resident of Churpora Narbal, Dawood, a resident of Mustafa Abad, Zainakote and Aaquib Gul, in a night-long gunfight with forces in Radbugh village of Budgam district.

At his ancestral Churpora (Sadpora) village of Narbal in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district, at least four rounds of funeral prayers were held for slain Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant Tafazul Islam, alias, Javid Sheikh.

Reports said that Islam was laid to rest amid pro-freedom and pro-Musa slogans at his ancestral graveyard.

Soon after the Gul’s funeral was over, clashes erupted between the youth and forces on the Airport road.

According to reports, the youth hurled rocks on police and paramilitary forces who responded by firing teargas shells.

Meanwhile, a complete shutdown is being observed in Magam, Aripanthan, Narbal and Beerwah area of the district to mourn the militant killings.
