Geelani hails UN chief’s statement, asks India-Pak to shun ‘stubbornness’

‘Any flare up between the two nuclear powers can prove extremely detrimental’

SRINAGAR: Hurriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Geelani on Saturday while hailing the statement of UN General Secretary said that the dialogue is the only option for the peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue.

Referring to the statement of Antonio Guterres, Geelani said that war is neither an option nor a solution to issues.

“We appeal the UN Secretary General to take impressive measures for the resolution of this long pending dispute,” Geelani said in a statement.

The Hurriyat leader added that due to the long pending issue, instability looms over all of South Asia.

“Kashmir dispute has multiplied human tragedies. It is because of this lingering issue that millions of people are facing immense hardships and a state of uncertainty and instability is looming over whole South Asian region,” the octogenarian pointed out in the statement.

Geelani also said that it’s encouraging that right from the day Guterres assumed office, he has taken a keen interest in the vexed Kashmir issue.

“I on behalf of suppressed people of Jammu & Kashmir express my gratitude to Antonio Guterres for his moral support to our cause. I hope that he will play a positive and effective role for its peaceful settlement,” said Geelani.

Geelani while addressing authorities in India and Pakistan, asked them to shun their haughty and stubborn attitude and play a constructive role for Kashmir issue’s peaceful resolution.

“War and inconsistencies is no option instead they cause devastation and destructions. Both India and Pakistan are nuclear countries and any flare up can prove extremely detrimental,” Geelani added.

Appealing both countries to demonstrate restraint and wisdom, Geelani asked them to resolve issue as per aspirations, wishes and expectations of people of state.

“Kashmir issue poses a threat for world peace. It is proving a big obstacle in peace, prosperity and development in the region,” Geelani asserted.

He further added, “People in Jammu Kashmir don’t like any confrontation and are against war like situations.”
