Cross LoC trade resumed days after 66 kg narcotics seized by Police

Srinagar: Cross LoC trade, that was suspended for several days after 66 kg narcotics was seized by Jammu and Kashmir Police from a truck coming from ‘Pakistan Administered Kashmir (PaK)’ to this side as a part of cross LOC trade, has been resumed today.

The trade was resumed after a meeting was conducted by the officials from both sides of the border.

As the trade had to resume today after remaining suspended for several days, the Sub Divisional Magistrate, Uri, Dr Sagar D Doifode, who also is in-charge custodian showed at the facilitation centre early morning.

However, when he found the customs officials absent, he immediately ordered the sealing of the office, report said

They said that he himself overlooked the trade for a day and four trucks laden with seeds and other spices left for Chakoti to cross over to the other side, despite the suspension of the trade.

Trade was suspended earlier when 66.5 kilograms of narcotic drugs which appeared to be heroine was seized from a truck bearing registration number XA-267. The truck driver was arrested on the spot.

“The drugs were hidden in fake cavities specifically fabricated for this purpose in boxes purportedly to contain mercantile goods. The Truck driver identified as Syed Yousuf has been taken into custody,” said the statement. A case was registered by Baramulla police and further investigation followed.

To prevent narcotics and arms smuggling on trade points across the LoC, the government has the proposal to install the full body scanner for scrutiny of vehicles carrying commodities across the LoC to contain the smuggling.

Terming cross LoC trade a confidence building measure (CBM) of great significance for Jammu and Kashmir, Minister for Roads & Buildings, Naeem Akhtar had said earlier that it is a step that could pave the way for larger reconciliation in the region.

The Minister said falling prey to certain controversies is not good to stop or suspend trade activities across the LoC, saying that such controversies had also erupted on Wagah Border with Pakistan and Doklam with China but the trade activities across the border remain going.
