Locals claim slain militant Hamid was ‘deeply affected by biased Indian Media who forced him to pick gun’

Srinagar: Three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants were killed in a gunfight with Indian armed forces on August 5, in the Amargarh area of Sopore.

Locals claim that one of them, Abid Hamid Mir, who was a second year B.Com student of Islamia College Srinagar, was “deeply affected by the propaganda of the Indian electronic media which provoked him to join militant ranks”.

As the news of his killing spread in the college premises, clashes erupted between the forces and students of Islamia College of Science and Commerce in Srinagar. Students raised pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.

Meanwhile, life remained still in Hajin town of Bandipora for the fourth consecutive day, from where Mir hails.

District administration ordered closure of all the educational institutions in Hajin and Sumbal towns after the encounter as a ‘precautionary measure’.

All government and private schools and colleges, as well as shops and other business establishments remain closed and traffic is off the roads.

The other two LeT militants were identified as Javed Ahmad Dar of Khanpora area of old town Baramulla and Danish Ahmad Dar son of Ghulam Hassan Dar, Batpora Sopore.

“As per directions of the Deputy Commissioner, Bandipora, class 11th examinations and class work in Degree College Sumbal and all other educational institutions of Hajin and Sumbal zones shall remain suspended for today as a precautionary measure,” said a statement issued by the authorities.

Meanwhile, internet services were cut off after the encounter in Baramulla district.

Police said that after receiving specific inputs, the Amargarh area was cordoned around midnight. Police claim that the militants were hiding inside a house, and the forces asked them to surrender. When they refused, a gun battle began around 2am and ended at 5.55am, officials said.
