Shift in strategy and introspection is needed by opposition: Omar Abdullah

Srinagar: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said Congress leader Ahmed Patel’s win in Gujarat Rajya Sabha polls “should have never been this difficult” and the Opposition needs to ‘introspect and shift strategy’ to counter the BJP in the 2019 general elections.

“That Ahmed bhai has won is a very welcome development, but it should have never been this difficult. Introspection & strategy shift warranted,” the National Conference (NC) working president wrote on Twitter.

“How much more evidence do we require to understand that we opposition parties are up against a ruthless, finely tuned BJP political machine,” he tweeted.

Calling the unity of opposition a ‘chimera’, he implied BJP returning to power in 2019 general elections.

“The myth of opposition unity has been systematically shown for what it is—a chimera. It’s each 1 for themselves in 2019 & 5 more years 2 BJP,” Omar wrote on Twitter.

Omar said that he hoped that there are people in the Congress who listen to what Jairam Ramesh is saying, who acknowledged that the party was in crisis.

“I hope there are people in the Grand Old Party who sit up & take note of what Jairam is saying. Dismissing his views will be shortsighted,” Omar said.

Ramesh, in an interview with PTI, said “I would say that the Congress is facing an existential crisis. It is not an electoral crisis. The party really is in deep crisis.”
