Mirwaiz to lead Friday prayers at Jamia after eight weeks, released from house arrest

Srinagar: Hurriyat (M) chief Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is scheduled to lead Friday prayers after eight weeks after his release from 57-day house arrest earlier in the day.

A spokesman of the outfit said that Mirwaiz was released from detention at his Nigeen residence today.

He will lead the congregational weekly prayers at Jamia today after eight weeks.

Jamia Masjid is a mosque in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. The Jamia Masjid of Srinagar is situated at Nowhatta in the middle of the Old City. It was built by sultan Sikandar Shah Kashmiri Shahmiri in 1394 AD. under the order of Mir Mohmmad Hamadani, son of Said-ul-Auliya Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani. Sultan Sikhandar’s son Zain-ul-abidin extended the Jama Masjid by including turret. It has similarities to Buddhist pagodas and is constructed in Persian style.

Jamia Masjid is located in a historical area (famous as downtown area) which also was central zone to the religio-political life in Srinagar.

The Government of India on August 4, after protests from different quarters, allowed Friday congregational prayers at historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar.

Jamia Masjid was closed for Friday prayers in the last week of Ramazan, and since then people were not allowed to enter it on Fridays, by the Indian Armed Forces.

A large number of worshipers had thronged the mosque to offer Friday prayers at the famous Jamia Masjid, where Mirwaiz addressed the worshippers over the phone.
