Hurriyat leaders placed under arrest ahead of programme to protest before NIA headquarters

Srinagar: Hours before the Hurriyat leaders were scheduled to fly to New Delhi to protest before NIA headquarters, authorities have arrested them citing that the leaders were “mobilizing people for rally to create law and order problem” in the summer capital.

Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were put under house arrest, while Yasin Malik was jailed in Kothibagh police station, police said.

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Range, Munir Khan told KNS that the resistance leaders were mobilizing people to take a rally from Jamia Masjid, Maisuma to Hyderpora before moving towards New Delhi.

“The people were being mobilized by the resistance leaders for a rally which would create law and order problem and disturb normal life and peace in Srinagar. So to maintain peace and law and order, we have put the resistance under detention,” Khan said.

“Had they moved normally like passengers go, we would have no problem in allowing them to go wherever they wanted to go. But we cannot allow anyone to disturb law and order and peace in the state,” the IGP said.

Geelani, Mirwaiz and Malik had on Wednesday announced to go to New Delhi and hold a sit-in protest at NIA headquarters and court arrest there against the NIA raids on Hurriyat leaders and businessmen.
