BJP destroyed PDP, says Rahul Gandhi

Srinagar: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday referred to the role of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which is in power with the BJP as its alliance partner in Jammu and Kashmir, and said, “PDP was instrumental in bringing youngsters in politics, but the day Modi made alliance with PDP, he destroyed them (PDP).”

Previously, in the month of April, the Wire reported about the break-up of the coalition, and said,” The differences within the coalition became visible when the PDP accused its ally of “poaching” one of the six seats from the party during the recently-held elections to the state legislative council. While six seats were up for grabs in the council, PDP spokesman Mehbooba Beg said there was an agreement for two seats each for the allies. The BJP, however, ended winning three seats after independent MLA Zanskar Bakir Hussain, who had supported PDP, cross voted for the BJP. The PDP had to be content with just one seat, as two seats went to the opposition National Conference and Congress.”

“So he (Modi) massively opened up space for the terrorists in Kashmir, and you saw the increase in violence,” he added.

Gandhi, who is on a two-week visit to the US to interact with political leaders, global thinkers and overseas Indians, spoke on the political environment in the country, the Congress party, the effects of demonetisation among other issues.
