Two children, one elderly killed in cross-LoC firing, reports say

LoC (Kashmir): A nine-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl and a 70-year-old man were killed in shelling across LoC (Line of Control) today.

According to a report in PTI, the nine-year-old boy and the teenage girl were killed while nine other civilians were injured when Pakistani troops opened fire and lobbed mortars at dozens of villages and posts along the Line of Control in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.

While a report in Dawn alleged that an elderly man was killed and five others ─ including a woman and her son ─ were injured, when Indian troops “shelled border villages in Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s (AJK) Haveli district”.

PTI reported a police spokesman saying that, “Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked and heavy firing and shelling from across the border in Dhigwar, Kerni and Shahpur sectors around 6:50 am.”

A nine-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl were killed and nine other civilians were injured in the Pakistani firing targeting different villages, he said.

While Dawn reports, Haveli’s deputy commissioner, Chaudhry Kashif Hussain, saying, “They [Indian troops] resorted to shelling at about 6am in Nezapir and Digwar sectors, using both small and heavy arms.”

The Dawn report adds that the shelling left a 70-year-old man identified as Muhammad Deen dead and his 25-year-old son Muhammad Jamil injured in Digwar village.

In the same village, Tasneem Bibi, 34, her 12-year-old son Aqib, and Muhammad Javed, 35, were also injured, Hussain added.

He said one Wali Mohammad was injured in the village Keirni in Nezapir sector.

According to PTI, the deceased in Pakistani shelling have been identified as Asrar Ahmad (9) of Mohallha Qasba and Yasmeen Akhtar (15) of Kerma village of Dighwar.

The condition of three of the injured was stated to be critical and have been referred to Government Medical College Hospital for specialised treatment.

Residents on both sides of the LoC have expressed fear and anguish over the continued shelling by the two countries.
