Delina’s alleged braid chopper was in a relationship, says police

Srinagar: Nayeem Ahmad Malla, a resident of Baramulla was caught by the police in an alleged braid chopping case in Delina, Baramulla, on Tuesday.

“Today afternoon, local people in Delina, Baramulla caught hold of a boy who they alleged was a Braid chopper,” police said.

According to the police, the locals had caught hold of the boy and were beating him mercilessly, where the police intervened and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. “On this a police party from Police Post Delina rushed to the spot. The boy was being beaten mercilessly when police intervened to rescue him. Large numbers of miscreants attacked police party as well but somehow the boy was rescued from their clutches by firing tear smoke shells to disperse them. He was immediately given medical treatment,” said the police.

A video circulated on social media earlier in the day showed the boy being caught in a mob. The video has already done several rounds on the social media. Some police officials are also seen in the video trying to control the crowd and take the boy.

The Jammu Kashmir police issued a statement saying that the boy was in a relationship with a local girl. “During preliminary investigation the identity of the boy was established as Nayeem Ahmad Malla son of Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Malla resident of Dandusa, Rafiabad Baramulla. Investigation into the matter also revealed that Nayeem was in a relationship with a local girl from Delina village and had gone to meet her when he was spotted and beaten up by locals there accusing him being Braid chopper,” the statement said.

An FIR has been lodged in the case and an investigation is in place. The police also requested the people not to fall prey to rumours.

“Police has registered a case FIR number 177/2017 and further investigation into the matter is going on. Miscreants involved in the violence will be dealt as per law.

People are requested not to fall prey to rumours and it is reiterated that strict legal action will be taken against attention seekers in the garb of Braid chopping.

Besides, rumor mongers and mischief mongers will also be brought to book who take advantage of the situation to disturb the peaceful atmosphere,” the police said.
