Illicit liquor seized in Jammu, lady among seven arrested

Jammu: Seven people were arrested after a large quantity of illicit liquor was allegedly recovered from their possession, the police said today.

A police spokesman said one person was arrested during a raid at village Gurah Jagir in Akhnoor area following recovery of liquor, a PTI report said.

During questioning he revealed that the liquor was provided by a salesman of a wine shop at Gurah Jagir to earn illegitimate profit on dry day, he said.

The arrested person has been identified as Neelam Kumar, son of Ram Saran of Gurha Jagir.

The report added that two more persons were arrested by a patrolling party at Ashok Nagar in Gandhi Nagar area after the search of their carry bags led to the recovery of 90 pouches of desi whisky, the spokesman said.

The arrested persons have been identified as Harjeet Singh, son of Jai Singh of Rani Bagh and Sunil Sudan, son of Pitamber Sudan of Mohallah Krishna Nagar, Miran Sahib.

A case under FIR Number 172/17 under Section 188 RPC and 48-A Excise Act has been registered at Gandhi Nagar Police Station and investigation started.

In another raid at village Kotli Shah Doula in R S Pura, he said police arrested two persons selling liquor pouches openly.

As many as 45 pouches of liquor were recovered from them during the operation, he said.

The arrested persons have been identified as Suchet Singh alias Sheti, son of Jeewan Singh and Mehar Singh alias Jalla, son of Harnam Singh, both residents of Kotli Shah Doula.

A case under FIR Number 231/17 under Section 48-A Excise Act has been registered at Police Station RS Pura and an investigation has been started.

He said another person was apprehended from B C Road near the bus stand along with 70 pouches of illicit liquor.

The arrested person has been identified as Abdul Qayoom, son of Abdul Razzak of District Ramban.

A team from Narwal Police Post apprehended a woman along with 62 pouches of illicit liquor. The arrested lady has been identified as Poppy, wife of late Madan Kumar of Rajeev Nagar.
