Protest against braid chopping tear gassed, cane charged at Batamaloo

Srinagar: People, mostly women, who were protesting against the increasing braid chopping incidents across the valley, were dispersed by the police using tear gas. Protesters were also cane charged.

Eye witnesses said that protesters were moving towards main chowk of Batamaloo when police restored to force to disperse them.

The Joint Resistance leadership had called for a shutdown on Monday against the braid chopping incidents calling it an attack on the ‘dignity of women.’

However, to prevent any protests authorities imposed restrictions in various parts of the city and as a result normal life was crippled. Public transport remained off roads, schools and business establishments remained shut too.

Barids of dozens of women have been chopped off in various parts of the valley and till date the authorities are clueless about who the perpetrators are.

The Director General of Police SP Vaid on Sunday said that he too is looking for a ‘magic wand’ in order to nab the criminals.

Meanwhile, in a number of instances people mistook innocents for braid choppers and thrashed them. In once such incident, a 70-year old man lost his life.
