Photojournalist Yousuf was arrested by Police not NIA: IGP Khan

Says two cases stand registered against him

Srinagar: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Range, Munir Ahmad Khan on Monday said the photojournalist Kamran Yousuf was arrested by Police over his involvement in the stone pelting incidents.

Khan told reporters during a presser that two cases stands registered against Yousuf over his involvement in the stone pelting.

“Yousuf wasn’t arrested by National Investigation Agency (NIA) but he was arrested by the Police over his involvement in stone pelting especially in the year 2016,” he said, adding that later the Police handed over him to NIA when they were investigating the terror funding case.

The IGP further refused to talk over the issue, saying that “I am no any NIA officer to talk over the issue.”

A Court in Delhi had extended the judicial custody of Yousuf and another youth, Javed Ahmad, till October 17. Kamran, a freelance journalist who has worked extensively with Greater Kashmir, was arrested on September 4 by Jammu and Kashmir Police and handed over to NIA a day after.

Earlier, Press Council of India (PCI) had issued a notice to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Jammu and Kashmir police, and other state officials over the arrest of photojournalist Kamran Yousuf. Taking a suo-motu cognizance regarding the arrest of the photojournalist, PCI had given two weeks time to the respondents to reply to the notice.
