Udta Kashmir?: ‘Drug addicts shifting to heroin, 70 admitted in one hospital, what is the govt waiting for?’

‘Heroin supplied though organised nexus’

Srinagar: Civil Society Forum Kashmir (CSFK) today said that there is a drastic shift in drug addiction scenario in J&K state and the addicts are now switching to more deadly and life threatening drugs like Heroin.

In a statement, CSFK said, “It is a processed drug unlikely Weed, bang etc, and is being supplied through an organized nexus in J&K State. All three provinces Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh are badly hit. As per doctors, the minimum requirement of a heroin addict is Rs2000 per day and he can go to any extend, like crime to fulfill his dose.”

CSFK said that it was shocked to learn that even after grave cases of Heroin addiction no concrete steps are being taken by the state government to control this problem.

In addition to Heroin there are thousands of addicts using other form of addiction like synthetic solvents, Corex Syrup, Fevicol, Tablets, and Shoe Polish.

The UNODCP report of 2008 said that there are 70,000 drug addicts in Kashmir valley, since then 9 years have passed without any concrete measure taken by any government.

According to experts, these addicts are mainly aged between 17 to 37, however cases have been found of children as young as 9 years old. Educational institutes are the worst hit, abd cases are coming from government as well as private institutes.

According to CSFK the main reason for drug addiction is that there is no institutional and organized effort by government of Jammu and Kashmir.

CSFK appealed to the government to set up a cluster of departments supported by J&K police to control Drug addiction in a organized manner, and to the society at large to check, control and report addicts.

The statement said that J&K state moving very fast to the position where Punjab stands right now.
